Non-Toxic Carpet Cleaner

I can't wait to get the carpet out of our house. The bedrooms are the only place in our home that still has it. Carpet houses so much yuckiness. Don't you agree? If you have kids or pets then you definitely know what I am talking about. Our pup is now 1 year old, but potty training and carpet was not a good mix. And tomorrow, potty training of my toddler starts. Oh please pray for me ;)

Carpet itself houses bacteria, pollen, dead skin and dust. One hot mess, right?! Men's Health reports, a microbiology research article published in 2001 found the average indoor carpet to be about 4000 times dirtier than a toilet seat, with about 200,000 bacteria per square inch. YUCK!!
I hope my husband doesn't read this post. He would be ripping out our carpets right this minute. Think about it, you lay your babies down to roll and crawl around on carpet, your family and pets walk around on them. Not only does our shoes and paws carry in all sorts of junk from where we have been but then we turn around and walk around on that very same carpet with our bare feet. Grossed out yet?

Unfortunately, just like almost every other cleaner on the store shelves, carpet shampoos are loaded with a bunch of toxic chemicals. Commercial carpet shampoos often contain highly toxic ingredients that are known carcinogens that can damage the liver, kidneys and nervous system. Take at look at the EWG's website to see how your carpet shampoo rates. And again our kids and pets are right down there on that carpet. Not a good combo. So let's talk ways to clean your carpets effectively without using toxic cleaners.

Spot Treat First...

You probably already have these 2 ingredients on hand... Distilled Vinegar and Baking Soda (we buy this in bulk here.) If you have visible stains, pour a small amount of vinegar over the stain. Then sprinkle with baking soda. Leave set, while you get your carpet cleaner ready.

Carpet Cleaner Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 unscented castile soap (we use this one)
  • 1 capful Thieves Household Cleaner (Find out where to get Thieves Household Cleaner here)
  • 15 drops Purification Essential Oil (where to buy the only trusted brand of essential oils our family uses here)
  • Water

Directions:
  • Add the castile soap, Thieves Household Cleaner and Purification essential oil to your carpet cleaners shampoo compartment. Fill remainder with hot water.
  • Steam clean carpets like normal.
  • Not only does this recipe effectively clean but it deodorizes and discourages bugs well. Win, win!!
