Baby Bum Cream

A baby's bum is a hot topic among mommies. If your little one's bottom is "unhappy," more than likely you have asked your other "mommy friends" what is best. As a nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, I see a lot of babies' bums. And it's not uncommon for a little one's bottom to need some extra "love." Fortunately in the NICU where I work, they are making strides to use more "natural" products. Awesome... right?!

There are a lot of products on the market to choose from. So what is best? Unfortunately, like many other personal products, diaper creams are filled with chemicals and toxins. Have you ever wondered why you little one screams when you put on a diaper cream... Chemicals burn!! Let's take a look at the popular product Desitin. Many of the ingredients are rated by the EWG Skin Deep Database has hazardous. Hazard ratings are shown as low, moderate or high concern categories, with numeric rankings spanning those categories that range from 1 (low concern) to 10 (high concern). Yea... not what I want to use on my baby.

If you are curious how your diaper cream rates, take a look on the EWG Skin Deep Database. Better yet... just make your own. That is what we do. I know it's safe and non-toxic. It's sooooo unbelievably easy and it WORKS!!!

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup shea butter (find HERE)
  • 3 Tbsp coconut oil (find HERE)
  • 3 Tbsp non-nano zinc oxide (find HERE)
  • 3 Tbsp arrowroot powder (find HERE)
  • 10 drops Young Living Gentle Baby essential oil (Find out how to get essential oils at wholesale HERE)

**Gentle Baby essential oil is designed specifically for mothers and babies! It is soothing to tender skin. You could also use Lavender and/or Tea Tree essential oils if you prefer as well.

** Note: Like cornstarch, arrowroot powder is a starch and can help feed yeast. Since it's not the primary ingredient in this recipe I don't think it would cause a problem with yeast-based rashes. But if you suspect yeast, you may want to omit and just use more zinc oxide in it's place.

Directions:
  1. In a double broiler or glass bowl add your shea butter. Bring to a low-medium heat. You do not want to melt the shea butter, just soften it.
  2. Transfer the shea butter to a stand mixer. Beat on high for 3-4 minutes.
  3. Next warm your coconut oil until almost melted. Pour slowly into your shea butter while whipping on high. Scrape down the sides as needed.
  4. Now add your zinc oxide. On the lowest speed, start mixing into your butter.
  5. Then add your arrowroot powder and continue mixing on low speed.
  6. Once the powders have started to incorporate, turn your mixer up to highest speed.
  7. Continue mixing for 3-4 minutes until soft and fluffy.
  8. Now add your essential oil. Whip for an additional minute.
  9. Store in glass container with a tight fitting lid, like THIS.  Or you could place into a squeezable container like I do with my Beach Cream. Get those HERE
  10. Apply to your baby's bum as needed.

  1. Would this be appropriate to use with cloth diapers?

    1. Hi Lindsay. The shea butter may cause the cloth diapers to repel. We do not use cloth diapers. I could never get my hubby on board with that... Boo. I know a couple moms use a liner during the "treatment" process, like an old cut up t-shirt and wash them separately.

    1. Hi Sheri. Zinc oxide is insoluble in water and coats the skin. When mixed with the other ingredients, it makes skin water proof and keeps it from drying out. It also has healing & anti-inflammatory properties.
